Sony Group Corporation · Fiscal year ended March 2026
What does Sony make now?
The first thing people associate with Sony depends on the person: televisions, cameras, headphones, PlayStation, movies or music. The fiscal year ended March 2026 makes the balance clearer. Games, music and pictures together account for ¥8.31 trillion in disclosed segment sales. Yet electronics and image sensors are still businesses above ¥2 trillion each. Sony is increasingly hard to describe with one product category.
This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Sony?
A television. A camera. Headphones. PlayStation.
All of them are real faces of the company.
But put the fiscal year ended March 2026 segment numbers side by side and those faces are very different in size.
Continuing-operations sales are ¥12.48 trillion
What is the largest business inside that ¥12-trillion-plus group?
Game & Network Services is the largest at ¥4.69tn
The story does not end with PlayStation.
Music is ¥2.12tn
Pictures adds another large entertainment business.
Pictures is ¥1.50tn
Entertainment is not one business at Sony
FY2025 segment sales. Segment figures are before intersegment eliminations.
Add those three disclosed segment figures together and Sony looks different again.
Games, music and pictures add up to ¥8.31tn
What about electronics, the face historically closest to the Sony brand?
ET&S is ¥2.26tn
So the useful conclusion is not that Sony has somehow stopped being an electronics company.
There is also another ¥2-trillion technology business that is much less visible to consumers.
Imaging & Sensing Solutions is ¥2.15tn
Three large blocks inside the current Sony
FY2025 segment sales. Entertainment is the site-calculated sum of G&NS, Music and Pictures; all figures use the same pre-elimination segment-sales basis.
That already makes a hardware-versus-content binary too simple.
FY2025 also changed the outline of the group itself.
Financial Services was partially spun off on October 1, 2025
That moves Sony away from the old image of a conglomerate that simply contains almost everything.
How does Sony itself describe the portfolio it is building now?
The stated axes are entertainment, IP, content creation and creation technology
That puts games, music and pictures on the same map as cameras, imaging and other creation technologies.
Sony is not only trying to own works and services, or only trying to sell the tools used to make them.
It has both sides inside the group.
Crunchyroll has more than 21 million paid subscribers
If Sony is viewed only as a maker of TVs and cameras, the scale of games, music and pictures disappears.
If it is viewed only as a content company, the ¥2-trillion-plus ET&S and I&SS technology businesses disappear instead.
THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS
What the numbers suggest
The current Sony is not well described by a simple shift from electronics maker to content company.
In the fiscal year ended March 2026, games, music and pictures together produced ¥8.31 trillion in disclosed segment sales. At the same time, ET&S generated ¥2.26 trillion and Imaging & Sensing Solutions ¥2.15 trillion. After the partial spin-off of Financial Services, Sony itself describes the portfolio direction around entertainment, IP, content creation and creation technology.
So what Sony “makes” is not just products, and not just works or stories.
It owns experiences and IP, technologies that help people create and capture them, and global touchpoints that deliver them.Televisions, PlayStation, music, movies, cameras and image sensors look disconnected only when each is viewed from its own product shelf. Put the numbers together and they form a company trying to turn creativity into a business from both the content side and the technology side.
