Olympus Corporation · Fiscal year ended March 2026
From microscopes to gastrocameras: Olympus at ¥1 trillion.
Olympus carries three strong historical associations: microscopes, cameras and gastrocameras. In FY2025, however, those businesses no longer sit side by side. Revenue reached ¥1.011 trillion, with 69% from Gastrointestinal Solutions and 31% from Surgical & Interventional Solutions. The company began by trying to manufacture microscopes domestically in 1919, developed a practical gastrocamera in 1950, transferred the Imaging business in 2021 and later separated and sold the Scientific Solutions business. The current Olympus is not simply an optics company that suddenly became medical. It is a company that extended technologies for seeing into the body, then concentrated its portfolio around that branch.
This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.
What does Olympus bring to mind?
Microscopes. Cameras. Gastrocameras.
All three genuinely belong to the company’s history.
But in FY2025, those businesses no longer sit side by side.
Revenue is ¥1.011 trillion
The largest current field is gastrointestinal care.
Gastrointestinal Solutions is ¥697.4bn
Even this division is broader than endoscope hardware alone.
Medical Service is about 30% of the GI business
The second pillar is surgical and interventional care.
Surgical & Interventional Solutions is ¥313.1bn
Today's Olympus is almost entirely two medical divisions
FY2025 revenue by current business division.
The geographic mix is just as concentrated outside Japan.
North America is 40%, Europe 28%
Japan is 10%; roughly 90% is outside Japan
Roughly nine-tenths of revenue comes from outside Japan
FY2025. Outside-Japan share is calculated from the company-disclosed 10% Japan share.
Those numbers make Olympus look unambiguously like a medical-device company.
The route to that portfolio, however, starts somewhere else.
It began with microscopes in 1919
That capability eventually moved inside the human body.
In 1950, Olympus built the practical gastrocamera
Olympus also built a famous camera business.
That business is no longer part of Olympus Corporation.
Imaging was transferred in 2021
Even microscopes, the founding business, were eventually separated.
Scientific Solutions moved to Evident
So Olympus did not simply switch identities from camera maker to medical-device maker overnight.
Its technologies for seeing spread from microscopes into cameras and into the body.
Then management narrowed the portfolio around the medical branch.
THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS
What the numbers suggest
Olympus generated ¥1.0107 trillion of revenue in FY2025.
Gastrointestinal Solutions generated ¥697.4 billion, or 69%, while Surgical & Interventional Solutions generated ¥313.1 billion, or 31%. Japan represented only 10% of revenue, leaving roughly 90% outside Japan by site calculation.
The company began with microscopes in 1919 and developed the world’s first practical gastrocamera in 1950, extending technologies for seeing into the human body.
Its camera business was transferred in 2021. Scientific Solutions, including microscopes, was separated into Evident and subsequently sold.
Olympus is therefore not a diversified optics company preserving every branch of its history.
It is a company that spent more than a century branching out, then concentrated the lineage of its technologies for seeing around endoscopy, intervention and treatment.
