Building compensation and credit around a sale: Mercari's transaction design.

A defective item can set a return or compensation process in motion. A deferred payment leaves money to collect after the purchase. Mercari's financial disclosures include measures of these operations surrounding the sale on the screen.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

Mercari combines the place where sales happen with services that handle disputes and payments. Completing compensation sooner and collecting deferred payments over a longer period are different responsibilities surrounding the same app.

Marketplace GMV reached ¥1,285.6bn in the year ended June 2026. Year-end credit balances were ¥358.1bn, supported in part by receivable financing. Compensation speed and a high collection rate are useful measures, but their conditions and scope prevent them from being universal assurances of safety.

Looking at the sale through compensation, collection and funding reveals more of Mercari. Alongside helping people find trading partners, it operates the responsibilities around their transactions.
