The work behind a pair of JINS glasses

JINS plans and sells eyeglasses and sunglasses through stores in Japan and overseas and through online channels. Its store service extends from frame selection to vision measurement, lens processing and fitting the glasses to the wearer.

A shop staff member adjusts glasses for a seated wearer, beside a workbench holding a round lens and lens-processing equipment.

The frame is chosen. The glasses still need finishing.

The store does more than hand over a product. Staff establish the lens strength, process the lenses and adjust the frame for its wearer.

  1. A staff member faces a seated customer across measuring equipment.

    1Establish lens strength

Staff measure the lens strength needed and establish which lenses to use.

  2. A round lens enters processing equipment and becomes a shaped lens that fits an eyeglass frame.

    2Process the lenses

Lenses are processed for the chosen frame and fitted into it.

  3. Beside a customer wearing glasses, a staff member adjusts the position of the frame.

    3Adjust the fit

Staff adjust the frame to sit comfortably on the wearer before handing it over.

A schematic of the buying process, not a depiction of a particular machine. Collection time depends on the type and availability of the lenses.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

JINS sells frames and lenses together with the work of finishing glasses for individual wearers. A 78.4% gross margin becomes a 10.3% operating margin after SG&A equal to 68.1% of sales. Reading the product business alongside the costs of people, stores and systems makes the opportunity and burden of expanding its network easier to understand.
