Advantest Corporation · Fiscal year ended March 2026

A measurement company became the semiconductor industry's final gate.

Advantest did not begin with semiconductors. It began with measurement. Founded in 1954, the company built voltmeters, frequency counters and other electronic instruments. In the late 1960s it bet heavily on semiconductor test systems. In FY2025, net sales reached ¥1.129 trillion and operating income ¥499.1 billion. As AI chips become more complex and valuable, the final task of verifying that each device works correctly becomes more important.

Advantest did not begin with semiconductors.

It began with measurement.

AI-related semiconductors were a major part of the backdrop.

AI, HPC and high-performance DRAM drove growth

Why does that help Advantest?

Because the company spent decades making measurement faster and more precise.

It started with electronic instruments in 1954

A digital frequency counter became a hit in 1957

Japan’s first digital voltmeter followed in 1963

In the late 1960s, management decided that semiconductors would become a much larger industry.

Japan’s first semiconductor test systems arrived in 1972

By 1979, test frequency had reached 100MHz

Global tester share reached No. 1 in 1985

The company name itself reflects that shift.

Advantest means Advanced Test Technology

As chips become faster, denser and more expensive, the cost of letting a defective device through also rises.

The final test step becomes more demanding, not less.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

Advantest generated ¥1.1286 trillion of net sales and ¥499.1 billion of operating income in FY2025, with a 44.2% operating margin.

AI-related HPC devices and high-performance memory were major demand drivers.

But the company’s position was built long before today’s AI cycle.

Advantest began with electronic measurement instruments in 1954, moved from frequency counters and digital voltmeters into semiconductor test systems, and launched Japan’s first such systems in 1972. By 1985, it says it had reached No. 1 global tester market share.

Advantest does not manufacture the chips themselves.

It occupies the final measurement gate whose value rises as semiconductor complexity and performance increase.

Look at the next company

From counting blood cells to selling reliable test results.

Sysmex generated ¥500.0bn of net sales and ¥51.8bn of operating profit in FY2025. Its roots lie in Japan's first automated hematology analyzer, commercialized in 1963. In 1965, founder Taro Nakatani expressed the stance of “selling the results.” Academic information followed in 1966, reagents in 1967 and reference materials for quality control in 1968. Sysmex then introduced Japan's first fully automated hematology analyzer in 1975 and what it describes as the world's first fully automated blood cell counter with a sampler in 1979. It later expanded into urinalysis, hemostasis and immunochemistry. Sysmex did not leave instruments behind. It expanded the scope of what it provides around a reliable laboratory result.
