Optical-laser production lifts demand for JEOL’s beam writers

JEOL makes electron microscopes, analytical instruments and electron-beam lithography systems. It supplies research, development and semiconductor-manufacturing operations with equipment for examining material structures and writing very fine patterns.

Writing the grating inside an optical laser

Where a laser manufacturer uses the beam writer

A simplified part of DFB-laser production. Equipment, materials and grating pitch are not drawn to scale.

  1. Optical-device manufacturer

An operator handling a circular, resist-coated wafer in front of the writing system.

    Prepare a resist-coated wafer

The material is a compound-semiconductor wafer coated with resist for patterning.

  2. JEOL’s beam writer

An enlarged schematic of the electron beam writing parallel grating patterns on the wafer’s resist.

    Write the grating pattern

A spot electron beam writes the pattern that will become the diffraction grating.

  3. Customer’s later processes

Light travels from a grating-bearing laser chip, produced by later manufacturing steps, toward an optical fiber.

Form the grating, then the laser chip

Development, etching, regrowth, electrode formation and chip separation produce the light-emitting component.

JEOL supplies the writing equipment. The laser is completed through several customer manufacturing processes.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

JEOL’s equipment is used both to examine material structures and to pattern the fine features of optical lasers. Following the specific task on the production line explains why a customer needs each machine.

A laser-grating writer and a photomask writer serve different customer production processes. In the year ended March 2026, those roles brought different demand: spot-beam orders and sales rose while mask-writer unit sales fell.
