YKK Corporation · Year ended March 2026

At YKK, architectural products outsell fasteners.

The YKK name is almost synonymous with zippers on clothing, bags and shoes. That image still matters. But in fiscal 2025, the Architectural Products business generated ¥557.6 billion in sales, compared with ¥431.4 billion for Fastening. By revenue, windows, sashes and other building products are now larger. Operating profit tells the opposite story: Fastening earned ¥39.2 billion versus ¥12.0 billion for Architectural Products. The two businesses are also connected historically—the architectural business grew from aluminum-production know-how developed for zipper materials.

This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.

For many people, YKK means zippers.

The letters appear on clothing, bags and shoes around the world.

That association is still important.

But at group level, another business is now larger by sales.

First, group sales are ¥992.5 billion

Put those two businesses side by side and the first reversal appears.

The implied operating margins are also very different.

A simple calculation gives about 9.1% versus 2.2%

At this point, YKK looks like a group with two separate pillars.

Historically, however, those pillars are connected.

The story starts with fastening—and turns toward aluminum

The important link is why YKK had aluminum capability in the first place.

Aluminum know-how for zippers became a route into building products

The new business then expanded from material processing into finished architectural products.

YKK is also no longer a company centered only in Japan.

The group operates in about 70 countries and regions

Even the workforce is now slightly larger outside Japan.

Seen this way, the question is not whether YKK is a zipper company or a window company.

Architectural Products are larger by sales.

Fastening is far stronger by operating profit.

And the architectural business itself grew from aluminum manufacturing capabilities developed around zippers.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

Connecting the numbers, YKK is not simply a zipper company that secretly became a window company.

In fiscal 2025, Architectural Products generated ¥557.6 billion in sales, more than the ¥431.4 billion from Fastening. But operating profit ran the other way: ¥39.2 billion for Fastening versus ¥12.0 billion for Architectural Products. Architectural Products lead in sales; Fastening leads in profit.

The connection between them also runs deeper than the group structure. In 1959, YKK used aluminum-alloy mass-production and processing know-how developed for zipper materials to enter building products. The group now operates in about 70 countries and regions, with slightly more employees overseas than in Japan.

YKK kept the small, familiar component as a strong earnings pillar while growing a second huge business from the manufacturing capabilities behind it.
