Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. · Fiscal year ended March 2026
Is Yakult still a Japan-centered company?
Yakult was born in Japan. The drink went on sale in 1935, and the Yakult Lady home-delivery system began in 1963. So it is natural to picture Yakult as a familiar Japanese probiotic-drink company. But the FY2026 numbers show a business whose center of gravity has spread much farther. Overseas food-and-beverage sales and operating profit both exceeded Japan, while about 38 million dairy bottles are consumed daily across 40 countries and regions. Being a Japanese-born brand no longer means being a Japan-centered business.
This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.
Yakult is a small bottle with a very Japanese origin story.
It went on sale in Japan in 1935, and the Yakult Lady home-delivery system began in 1963.
So the familiar image—a Japanese probiotic-drink company—is not wrong.
But split the current business between Japan and overseas, and the center of gravity looks much more global.
Revenue is ¥486.4 billion
Break that sales number into food and beverages in Japan and overseas, and overseas is now larger.
Overseas ¥240.0bn, Japan ¥229.6bn
Food-and-beverage sales are now larger overseas
FY2026, before segment-level consolidation adjustments.
The same pattern appears in profit.
Overseas operating profit is ¥36.3bn, versus ¥27.7bn in Japan
“Overseas” is not one market.
Asia and Oceania is the largest overseas sales region at ¥136.2bn
Bottle volumes make the shift even easier to see.
Japan: 8.93 million a day. Overseas consolidated subsidiaries: 20.04 million.
The Japan figure appears in the domestic sales section of the same material; the overseas figure appears in the overseas-company section.
Include equity-method affiliates and the global reach is larger still.
About 38 million dairy bottles a day worldwide
The global scale behind one small bottle
Yakult's FY2026 investor-site snapshot.
That reach spans many markets.
Sold in 40 countries and regions
Factories and retail shelves are only part of that network.
About 80,000 Yakult Ladies work around the world
And the overseas model is not simply about exporting finished bottles from Japan.
From Taiwan in 1964 to a local-production, local-sales model
This is not really a choice between calling Yakult a Japanese company or a foreign one.
The more useful distinction is between where the system started and where the business now operates at scale.
THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS
What the numbers suggest
This is not a story about Yakult ceasing to be a Japanese company.
The system began in Japan: Yakult in 1935, the Yakult Lady home-delivery model in 1963, and the first overseas operation in Taiwan in 1964. That Japanese-born model then spread through local production and local sales.
In FY2026, overseas food-and-beverage sales of ¥240.0 billion exceeded Japan’s ¥229.6 billion, and overseas operating profit of ¥36.3 billion exceeded Japan’s ¥27.7 billion. Worldwide, about 38 million dairy bottles are consumed each day across 40 countries and regions, supported by roughly 80,000 Yakult Ladies.
So the familiar bottle in Japan no longer tells you where the business is centered. Behind it is a local production, sales and people network whose overseas scale is now larger than Japan on several key measures.
