From toilets to semiconductor equipment: TOTO’s second technology pillar.
TOTO naturally brings toilets and WASHLET products to mind. That image still reflects the core business well. But TOTO's technology does not stop in the bathroom. Slip casting, firing-shrinkage control and precision polishing developed through sanitary ware and faucets now support advanced ceramic components used in semiconductor and display manufacturing equipment. In FY2025, the Advanced Ceramics Business reached record-high sales and operating profit. TOTO has not moved away from water-related products; it has extended the technology built there into a very different, high-barrier market.
This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.
TOTO naturally brings toilets and WASHLET products to mind.
That image still describes the core business well.
But the technology TOTO developed over more than a century now works in places far beyond the bathroom.
Sales are ¥737.4 billion
The company’s core remains water-related housing equipment.
Housing equipment is still the core
The historical roots are also unmistakably in water-related products.
The timeline runs from toilets to WASHLET
A part of that technology began moving into a different market in the 1980s.
Advanced Ceramics began in 1984
By FY2024, it had already become an unusually profitable business.
FY2024 Advanced Ceramics margin was 41%
A second technology pillar is growing beside housing equipment
FY2025 group actuals and FY2024 Advanced Ceramics actuals are shown with their years separated.
The ceramics business continued to expand in FY2025.
FY2025 Advanced Ceramics reached record sales and profit
The important point is that the technology is not disconnected from housing equipment.
Sanitary-ware forming and faucet polishing moved into advanced ceramics
The AD-component story is even more direct.
Four meters can be finished within 0.003 millimeters
The technology moved out from the core business
Selected milestones in TOTO's water-related and Advanced Ceramics history.
TOTO is now putting more capital behind that expansion.
About ¥30 billion of growth investment is decided through FY2028
The company does not frame housing and ceramics as competing identities.
TOTO describes them as complementary pillars
TOTO’s technology did not leave the toilet behind.
It traveled outward from the difficult manufacturing problems involved in making water-related products.
THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS
What the numbers suggest
TOTO generated ¥737.4 billion of sales in FY2025, and the company says both net sales and operating profit reached record highs.
Housing equipment remains the core. TOTO still builds its business around WASHLET products, sanitary ware and other water-related products.
But since 1984, the company has also built an Advanced Ceramics Business supplying electrostatic chucks and AD components for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. That business reached record-high sales and operating profit in FY2025.
The connection is manufacturing technology. Sanitary-ware slip casting, faucet polishing, and know-how in controlling shrinkage and deformation during firing all traveled into advanced ceramics.
TOTO is not a toilet company that abandoned its core for semiconductors. It is a company that extended the manufacturing capabilities developed in toilets and water fittings into a specialized, high-barrier industrial market.
