Does Shimano make bicycles?
Calling Shimano a bicycle company is economically accurate. In FY2025, Bicycle Components produced 76.1% of sales and 82.9% of operating income. But Shimano's main products are not finished bicycles. They are the components—shifting, braking and drivetrain systems—that determine how bicycles work and feel. The same precision-metal capabilities also extend into fishing tackle.
This is not investment advice or a stock recommendation. We reorder company-published primary-source facts to make the shape of the business easier to see.
Shimano is easy to think of as a bicycle company.
The FY2025 numbers say that image is largely right.
The important distinction is that Shimano usually sits inside the bicycle rather than selling the finished bicycle itself.
Sales are ¥466.2 billion
Most of that business is still bicycles.
Bicycle Components generate ¥355.0bn in sales
The mix makes that concentration even clearer.
76.1% of sales and 82.9% of operating income come from Bicycle Components
There is, however, a substantial second pillar.
Fishing Tackle is a ¥110.8bn business
Bicycle Components dominate, with Fishing Tackle as a second pillar
FY2025 segment results.
Where does Shimano sell all of this?
Japan represents only 9.1% of sales
About nine-tenths of sales come from outside Japan
FY2025. The 90.9% outside-Japan figure is a site calculation from Japan's 9.1% share.
That scale can make Shimano look like a global bicycle manufacturer.
But its corporate profile describes the main business more precisely: bicycle components.
The core layer is components, not finished bicycles
That position goes back almost to the beginning.
In 1922, Shimano chose the freewheel
Over time, the value moved from individual parts toward integrated control.
Shifting and braking became one control system
The precision behind those systems is not confined to bicycles.
Bicycle gear machining also reaches into fishing reels
That component layer is still moving forward.
Components are becoming automatic as well as mechanical
Shimano has not moved away from bicycles.
It has gone deeper inside them.
THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS
What the numbers suggest
Shimano is not “no longer a bicycle company.”
Bicycle Components produced 76.1% of FY2025 sales and 82.9% of operating income. The economic center is unmistakably bicycles.
The distinction is that Shimano’s core role is not finished-bike assembly. It builds the components that control shifting, braking and drivetrain performance. That path runs from the technically demanding freewheel in 1922 to STI integration and today’s automatic shifting.
At the same time, the same precision-metal capability extends into fishing reels. Fishing Tackle is a ¥110.8 billion second pillar.
And Japan represents only 9.1% of sales. Outside Japan is 90.9% by site calculation.
Connecting those facts makes Shimano look less like a company that sells bicycles and more like a global component and technology company embedded inside bicycles and outdoor products.
