Headquarters costs and consolidation adjustments sit between segment profit and consolidated operating profit. Dividing the Pharmaceutical segment’s ¥30.4bn by the group’s ¥93.3bn therefore does not establish its share of group profit.

THE VIEW AFTER THE NUMBERS

What the numbers suggest

For the year ended March 2026, Meiji Holdings’ Food business generated ¥942.8bn in sales and ¥68.7bn in operating profit. Its Pharmaceutical business contributed ¥232.2bn in sales and ¥30.4bn in operating profit. The consolidated operating profit of ¥93.3bn includes adjustments, so it is not the simple sum of segment profits.

Stronger overseas medicine profits and the rebound from the previous year’s vaccine write-down contributed to pharmaceutical growth; this should not be mistaken for uniform demand growth.

The 2009 group integration, 2011 reorganization and KM Biologics joining in 2018 explain how distinct histories coexist. Familiar foods and a pharmaceutical business earning ¥30.4bn in operating profit form the group’s two substantial pillars.

¥301 billion from keeping food cold: Nichirei's other core business.

For the year ended March 2026, Nichirei reported ¥716.1bn in consolidated sales and ¥39.0bn in operating profit. Its Food segment generated ¥426.7bn in sales and ¥19.9bn in operating profit, while temperature-controlled logistics generated ¥301.0bn and ¥18.6bn respectively. Overseas logistics sales were ¥92.6bn. Logistics operating profit rose by ¥2.8bn year on year, although ¥2.4bn of profit impact came from depreciation-method changes and related effects; it should not all be attributed to underlying demand. The company's roots go from a fisheries-control enterprise in 1942 to ice-making, cold storage and freezing in 1943, to private Nippon Reizo in 1945, refrigerated long-haul trucking in 1959 and logistics in Europe in 1988. Making frozen food and helping many companies keep food cold are distinct commercial activities built on a long shared history of preserving and delivering food.
