What emerges

Toray generated ¥2.585tn of revenue and ¥141.9bn of core operating income in FY2025. Company-disclosed revenue shares are 41% Fibers & Textiles, 35% Performance Chemicals, 12% Carbon Fiber Composite Materials, 6% Water Treatment & Healthcare and 7% Other. Toray started in 1926 as a rayon producer and changed its name from Toyo Rayon to Toray in 1970 as the business expanded far beyond rayon. Carbon-fiber research began in 1961, PAN-based carbon fiber was developed in 1970, and the technology later reached primary aircraft structures. Reverse-osmosis membrane research also began in the 1960s; Toray says its membranes now serve 70 countries and can process an amount of water equivalent to the usage of roughly 400 million people. Toray did not leave fibers behind. It kept moving material-design technologies into stronger, thinner and more selective materials.
