Is Nikon really a camera company?
Nikon has not abandoned cameras and become something else. Imaging remains its largest business and is assigned a stable-profit role. But 57.2% of FY2026 revenue came from outside Imaging. Nikon has placed optics and precision capabilities into microscopes and healthcare, lithography and semiconductors, industrial measurement and metal 3D printing. That expansion is not a simple success story: Digital Manufacturing recorded a massive impairment and the group posted a ¥112.4 billion operating loss. Even so, the new plan explicitly uses cash from Imaging, Healthcare and Industry to fund Precision Equipment and Digital Manufacturing. Nikon makes more sense as a company that uses light to see, measure and make across several markets than as one defined by cameras alone.
